I inherited a sizable coin collection. I am still going through these after six months or so. Picking through what I want to keep and add to what I want to keep. I have found about 10rolls of rusty steel cents. Some are not that bad and I can see some of the original surface. From what I can see they are BU condition. My question is are there any safe ways to remove this rust without ruining the coins? Or are they already ruined? Probably a silly question I'm pretty sure I already know the answer. But I figured it doesn't hurt to ask. Thanks all |

As far as I know, there is no way to remove the rust besides reprocessing the coin. Then they are worthless to collectors. Yep, they are ruined....  |

I think all the old folks thought these were going to be the next big thing because I got some coins from my grandfather and I bet he had 20 or 30 rolls of these things that he pulled out of circulation and I think about 90% of them are rusted to different degrees

They are legal tender value is still 1 cent

I have about ten or so steel cents too, most rusted. I just try to appreciate them for what they are... coins with a little age and character. Let the rust stay!  |

I take my slightly rusted steel pennies and give them away. A neat coin with a little story behind it may spark some one's interest in the hobby. I know that my nephews sure do enjoy them. In fact, they are so important to them that they are stored in their "safe."

Newdavid, I also put some of these away,the trick is to put them in air tight tubes. You can remove the rust with a cleaner called THE WORKS,but the damage is done.Lots of people today dont even know about the steel penny. I also give a few away and spend a few for other to find.I have a few rolls that look like they just came from the mint.You could put them on ebay they sell for 10.00 and up per roll.The BU rust free sell for more than 50.00 a roll. I'd have to agree with Brian, older folks must have thought these coins would be worth something. My grandfather hoarded about 20 pounds of circulated silver. Mixed in with that was a bunch of other miscellaneous coins including several roles of steel cents.
