French medal? The damage at the top looks like it is in a spot where it might have had some type of attatchment point.

This is a french medal from the cathedral or Chartres in france.
It says : Souvenir of pilgrimage to Notre Dame of Chartres.
On the other side : Notre Dame de Sous Terre (our lady of the underground - not sure what it refers to - I'm living 50 km from there and didn't knew one of the statue was named like that) - Notre dame de ? (cannot read that one) - at the bottom : Pray for us

This is a souvenir token, brought back from there by a pilgrim.

Here is the wikipedia page on the cathedral : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartres_Cathedral

It's on the right that I cannot read :)
What you wrote means Notre Dame of Chartres (name of the cathedral and in general of virgin Mary) - pray for us ("standard" prayer for Notre Dame in catholic / christian religion)

OK, this is a black virgin Mary in the cathedral. Here are some pictures : http://cathedrale.chartres.free.fr/pg91.htm
Just saw that the other virgin Mary mentioned is another one of the 3 Mary representations of the cathedral (more reading here - us google to translate : http://www.france-secret.com/chartres_art2.htm)
