1983 Unplated Zinc Cent? - Coin Community Forum

Lonz Valued Member 494 Posts	Posted 08/02/2012 6:04 pm Got this at the gas station today - they held onto it because they know I'm into old or "strange" coins.... weighs 2.5g and resembles a 1943 Steel I've read a couple posts on here about others. Shouldn't it weigh less? Or is the copper plating virtually null in regards to weight? If it's been "plated" with zinc or something else - wouldn't it be heavier than 2.5? As always your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated. Report this Post to the Staff

baristaben New Member United States 36 Posts	Posted 08/02/2012 10:36 pm The copper plating only amounts to about 2% of the actually substance of the penny. I am new and I am sure someone brighter than me will come along with better info, but to me it COULD be unplated zinc, but it is more likely a science experiment. You can plate a penny with zinc, but you can also remove the copper.
