I'm on the hunt for a nice mid-grade Liberty Cap Cent, and was watching these auctions. What do you make of the final sales price (incl fees) - NGC VF25, non-CAC, $1891PCGS VF20, CAC, $3600Double the price for the PCGS coin! Both "head of 1794" so not like some rare variety. I know CAC adds some value, but that much? I actually like the NGC a little better because of the color.. Anyway, thoughts appreciated. |

I like the NGC better bc of the price, I think the pcgs coin is a higher grade though not as attractive. I don't understand how the PCGS example could possibly have a lower grade than the NGC example. All the letters and numbers are clear with the PCGS coin, whereas they are heavily worn on the NGC coin. I'm not saying I'd necessarily pay twice as much for the PCGS coin, but I personally think it's a much better example and definitely worth more regardless of the grade assigned.

I personally prefer the NGC coin. I prefer it even more when I look at the prices!

Thank you for the replies, but I am still flummoxed at the pricing here, I am shopping for one of these and don't want to botch it up. Wonder whether this was true market pricing, or a 1-time random glitch.
Maybe PCGS has a more 'cred' than NGC and stricter grading standards? (evidence here backs this up)
Maybe the CAC made all the difference?
Maybe it had something to do with GC vs HA auction sites?
Or maybe just random bidding war on one and lack of eyeballs on the other, and if the auctions were run again, they would come in equal price, or maybe even be flipped around. I just don't know.

None of those factors should be discounted. Like it or not, labels, stickers, and venues all affect the market price. The final prices would absolutely be different if you ran it back.

for one reason or another PCGS graded coins generally garner a higher premium.
But in this case, I would go for the NGC graded coin because of both appearance and price.
