While reading all these posts I am reminded of a movie I've seen recently especially after reading thq's post. It's called Everything's Illuminated which is an Independent movie. It is really good movie. It is about a young Jewish man who collects just about anything that has to do with his family's history and life. You have to see the stuff in his collection. It eventually takes him to Russia as he seeks to understand his family's heritage.
It's a very good comedy that turns into drama.
I hope this encourages members to rent the DVD. I enjoyed it so much that I've recently ordered the book which bears the same title as the movie. I am also going to buy a copy of the dvd.

I am like Auldfarte, I do not talk too much about my coins locally except for close friends, because I do not want cousin burglar getting any ideas.

It is ashamed that in todays world, if you have anything of value, you have to hide it. Heck, people will shoot you for 10 bucks nowadays.

These forums give me a little anononimity, yet I can still share thoughts with people with the same interests.

And yes, I am just fine spending time by myself. Like SuperDave said, I am in IT support, and at the end of the day, I do not care to speak to any more silly humans. (Family excluded)

I'm not as much a loner as some folks that have posted. Everyone in my family collects something, so they're generally accepting and interested when I show my latest acquisitions.

Though I have learned not to bother showing by mediaevals and ancient bronzes to my mum... "Sure, sure... old coins? It looks like you found those on the driveway.".

Or my nicely toned silver coins to my brother... "That looks awful - are you sure you won't let me clean it up a bit for you?".

Of course, I'm a member of two local coin clubs, so I also get to meet and talk with fellow coin fanatics on a regular basis.

By the very nature of logging on to this forum and contributing, the loners are no longer lonely. 24/7 access to a discussion board to read about other points of view, share images, post questions and discuss topics of a specific nature to people who are interested.

In our age, I find it superfluous to have someone next to me discuss our interst. If I want comments of a useful or relative nature, I can post it to a distribution board to people who are interested and interesting!

I'm an Australian living in London collecting Australian (mainly) and International coins and banknotes. This is my 3rd forum, so sometime, somewhere, someone is logging on that will appreciate the joy and excitement of having a coin for it's own sake, whether if ends off a collection or is the first into a new area.

Of course, there are always traders, coin fairs and other clubs abound for those of the more go-getting nature!

And while spending time alone is enjoyable and rewarding, if you are reading this then you are not a loner.

And remember, Satre said "If you are lonely while you're alone, you are in bad company."

i have always been involved in solitary pursuits - I like to be in control. that's what it comes down to in the end - I enjoy sharing my coin finds with others, but like most of us, those readily available to share with don't have the same interest. I am lucky that my father is a coin dealer and has been able to share his years of experience with me. at times, I'm sure he wants to change his phone number, but I think we have gotten much closer as a result of my interest in coins.

i can appreciate the isolated feeling many of us share - I never fit in growing up and always felt like I was on an island in the ocean - alone and isolated. reading literature and studying history, along with my interests in several hobbies allowed me to connect with others alone on their islands. I was in several clubs for model and prototype trains and ham radio.

now we have the internet and it's interesting that so many people feel isolated. I guess reading about another person via the internet allows for a huge disconnect, at least it does for me. I guess that's more of a function of feeling isolated to begin with. I'm thinking of joining a coin club - that seemed to allow me to share with others while feeling part of a collective whole.

I don't think this hobby is a "loner's" hobby - it is just that the vast majority of the populace is basically indifferent to the currency they carry. Because of this it not the celebrated by the general public as a "study of history" as promoted in the coin industry publications.

I also find that the "lonesome" part has more to do with your chosen venue of acquisition - I recently attended a local coin show and it was standing room only. I suspect that many newer collectors utilize the internet for the bulk of their transactions, which may lead them to feel somewhat like loners. I encourage anyone feeling lonesome to attend a local coin show - you will find you are far from alone in your love of coins.

TexasMick, that 5 kilo cheese was from northern Spain, from the town of Balaguer if I recall correctly. Near Barcelona. Flavor like a manchego, but a little softer texture. The people that turned up their nose at it 10 years ago would be more appreciative today.

Fantastic post! Thank you Jan for starting it, and everybody else for your contribution. I've lost 15 minutes of work time (not worth that much), and gained a reflexion on my collecting habits, and my life in general.

I certainly enjoy being alone. Sorry if this sounds pathetic, but for me, going to lunch with the latest issue of Coin World or Canadian Coin News is a great pleasure. I also enjoy talking with others about the coins I like so much. It's just not that obvious finding people with enthusiasm and knowledge about world coins, except at the occasional coin show. That's why this forum is so helpful and enjoyable every day.

Maybe the nature of coin collecting makes it a hobby as far away as mass media entertainment as can be. It doesn't fill 2500 movie theatres every weekend and doesn't possess the cool factor that attracts young crowds. It's more like reading, or running a marathon, in a way. A personal endeavor.

I can talk to my friend about coin collecting, I'm getting her sort of interested in it. The rest of my friends don't really care, except for when I say something like "I spent $600 on a penny yesterday!" Then they give me a strange face and ask if I'm nuts. Also, yes, I said 'penny', not 'cent'.

I also believe that this forum is great for people who want to brag or ask questions or whatnot relating to numismatics. It's hard to find people offline that actually care (unless they're your coin dealer or whatever)

I'm a loner too. I don't like crowds and people I associate are a small group that I've gotten to know in a long period of time. My family doesn't really understand paying money to buy money. My fiance try to be interested but he doesn't really understand. I don't talk about coins to anyone simply because I'm not much of a talker.

The forum has been great and I don't think I would have been an active collector if not for the forum. Most of my knowledge on numismatic was gained from the forum.
