Does anyone have any tips for taking coin photos with a Digital Camera, I am planning to put some of my extra coins on ebay and would like to put some photos that bring the best out in the coin, I dont expect perfection but if anyone has any tips they would be greatly appreciated.... also I dont have a scanner. Thanks!

Like you I have often marvel in wonder how some collectors/dealers can present such wonderful shots of coins taken with a digital camera. I came across this link and have tried the tips given and now can take pictures just as good as any produced using sophisticated equipment. Check this Out Cheers.....Lim

Forget the milk jug. Its a pain in the butt. Get a 30 watt halogen spot. Hopefully your camera has a "point and shoot" white balance. If so, go to a camera shop and get a 15 or 20 percent grey card. Use that to set your white balance under the halogen light. Then you will just have to play around and figure out 3 different settings for exposure. One for silver and nickel, one for coppers, and one for gold. It will take a little time, but every camera is different. Once you get the settings, write them down and your set. Gold.... Silver.... Copper....

It all depends on what you want the photos for and how much detail/clarity in those photos. For me, it is to take the best possible shots of my collection for cataloging before they are "entombed" in vaults. Using the methods as suggested in the link, I have been able to produced the following examples of coins in my collection. 1. A bimetal proof coin with an exterior ring of silver and a core of gold (capturing both gold/silver). Click Here 2. 2000 Kilomasterpiece ....Silver Proof Click Here 3. Penny Click Here

I wonder if anyone has had the same problem I have with uploading photos onto a computer from a camera. The uploaded images of mine seem to have sort a zigzaggy appearance at the edges of the images. For example, where the edge should be straight, it has a slightly jagged appearance. I was thinking maybe my computer is too much of a dinosaur to be compatible with my Olympus 5.0 megapixel. It's as if the computer is unable to completely resolve the image...or something. I know nothing about these things, maybe someone has an answer? I don't know if I explained this very well. This occurs even when I take the photo at the lowest quality the camera is capable of.
Looking at the beautiful images you all displayed, I'm very impressed.

My guess is your monitor is displaying 72 dpi. See if you can change it to 96. If not it's tme for a new monitor. FYI.. you should always take your photos at the highest setting. Then crop and resize with your image editing software.

Thank you for the info. I suspected my monitor too. It's pretty old and I got it free.
