As many know, I have been putting together a set of world coins for the year I was born. I had been thinking about getting the Krause "Catalog of World Coins for 1901-2000" to help with coin identification and their metal content. While checking various prices online, I saw that it was also available on DVD. I really liked the idea of having the information compact and portable.*
The DVD arrived a few days ago, and I have been using it to update and correct all the Krause numbers for those coins in my list. Before getting the DVD, I had not identified some coins with their Krause number, some of my numbers were missing the version (#.1 or #.2), and some of my numbers were completely wrong.
The PDF file on the DVD includes about 66 pages of countries that I think were omitted from the printed version. Since, I am almost always near a computer; it's much easier for me to use one DVD, rather than a 2300+ page catalog. To explore the file, I am using Adobe Reader and its search function. I put the year or any topic in the search box, and it can find all occurrences, or I can use the bookmarks to jump to a specific country of interest. I have also printed a few reference pages, like date and numeral conversion charts.
If you are doing research and you can make use of a DVD, I highly recommend the DVD version of the Krause Catalogs.
*I have never used a printed Krause Catalog, so I can make no comparisons between the media types.

UPDATE - It appears not all Krause Books are on DVD. For World Coins, I can find "1601-1700", "1701-1800", and "2001 to date", but I could not find a DVD for "World Coins 1801-1900".  Edited by Fuzzy317

Because I collect World coins, all centuries, all cultures, Krause catalogues covering the past 400 years are essential for me.
Fuzzy317: Be patient a little longer, I'll betcha they are currently working on a DVD for 1801 - 1900.
For me I wish for a DVD covering all World coins, going back to the invention of coinage.

I have a copy of the World Coins 1801-1900 on DVD. It is the last version and not the current one that just came out. The only one that I can't find on DVD is the Unusual World Coins Catalog and the World Paper Money Specialized. I have all the DVD's in PDF version and keep it on my ipad mini. I can take it anywhere with me. Beets hauling all the books with you to a coin show or a shop. |

I took the plunge...  I had originally purchased the Krause "Catalog of World Coins for 1901-2000" to help with coins for my Birth Year Set and was impressed enough to purchase the Krause "Catalog of World Coins for 1801-1900 6th Edition" on DVD. The DVD arrived yesterday, and I will be using it for research and reference. This DVD is easy to use like the other one. The only difference I have noticed is that the bookmarks don't list each country, they are simply by the first letter. There is a country index so you can jump to a specific page, but the DVD is one page more than the printed version index (including the cover adds a page). For example: the index lists United States on page 1200, its actually on DVD page 1201. This DVD is not shown on the Krause Publications site, so hopefully they are working on a DVD for the 7th Edition of the printed catalog.  |
