Ok, I'll try and make this short...or as short as I can. I had a volunteer where I work bring in coins that his grandfather had left him. He didn't know anything about them and turns out he wants to sell them. This guy is a real good guy and I want to try and find the best way to do this for him. What I'm asking for as a bit much in terms of help. I'm looking for help with grading and recommendations on whether they should be 'restored' and how I would get that done and if I should get them professionally graded. Who would pay the most for them(ie local dealers to avoid shipping, live auctions, ebay) and what your subjective values are. Yes, it's a lot to ask.

My other problem is I have a copier at work that scans them to pdf...which looks pretty good but I can't seem to convert them to show you. To give you an idea here's a brief list of the older coins.

1788 Carolous III 1R
2 x 1812 Half Pennies
1815-1830 Collonies of Commerce(not the one with the ship)
1820-bust and harp
1820-Upper Canada Half Penny Commercial Change
1837 Token - Province du bas Canada
1842-Province Of Canada
and on and on...most of these are in rough to really rough shape imo

I was some able to make shift part of the photo to give an idea of what these coins look like. Ignore my writing and values, I have no clue what I'm doing. I also don't know what errors to look out for if any...let me know if you want me to email anyone the pdf's. And thanks again for your time.

If there is dirt on them try dipping them in acetone. It will remove organic material but will not harm the coin. Other than that do not clean these. It will lower the value. I have no idea what they are worth though.

I will buy them from you, but I don't have my token catalog handy. Does anyone know what they're worth?

True for pure acetone but if its not pure then the additives can turn copper pink. Nail polish remover is not pure acetone.

Acetone is a LAST RESORT for copper coins(ADULT SUPERVISION IS STRONGLY ADVISED) and if the coin,be it silver, gold, nickel or clads, the coin must be submerged in the solution while restoring.

This site is family orientated and many youngsters are presently members or access this site for honest opinions dealing with their hobby. Acetone and it's use can have disastrous results.

If distilled water does not achieve the desired result, try a soak in hot distilled water,(no detergents)several times if needed,1/2 hour intervals without rubbing, scraping, picking away etc. Assess the result in relation to the coins value and rariety; is it worth more investment in time and money? If so, seek out safe methods that DO NOT REQUIRE CARCINOGENS.
