Hi all , I've bought this plastic capsules with the black foam looking ring that wraps around the coin to protect it from scratches and... after 2 years most of the silver coins ( silver eagles, maples, wild life serious and some panda which I changed the capsule) tarnished around the rim of the coin, does anyone have any clue why did this happened? will this destroy the value of the coin? what should I do? ore the capsules without the foam O'rings better?

Are your coins proof, or just regular bullion coins?

I have the same setup. Some of mine tarnish just like yours- 99% don't. I never really thought the rings were the culprit. Figured the rim was the closest thing to the elements, which is why that area tarnishes first. Air leaking in from an imperfect seal. It would still take a lot of empirical data to rule out my suspicions that the rings aren't the issue. But I personally believe the seal is the weak link with all the acrylic cases, with or without rings.

One or two of mine have done the same thing. According to the manufacturer the rings are made of an inert compound that has no effect on silver. The capsules are not vacuum sealed. What ever was in the air when you capsulized the coin, is in the air-tite. If you put all your coins in a capsule on a hot humid, dusty day, the dusty , humid air in the capsule will affect the coin.

I've seen some like this before. I always assumed it from from people handling the coins by the edges before it was put in the holder. Of course I have nothing to back that idea up. Just that some people have fat fingers that don't always stay on the edge of the coin.

I have two 1.5oz 2013 Polar Bear coins, one was stored in the perfect closed air-tite with the foam ring, the second in the capsule without perfect fit but without foam ring. Both were put into the capsules on the same day....after half an year, the coin in the air-tite with the ring developed white areas (like milk spots) on the edges. The second coin is clear.

for some reason your image is not coming up for me but I thought I'd share some of my tarnished bullion. they are in a sealed plastic sleeve but some of them have had the rim cut the plastic and air has gotten in, there was no foam ring, 3 of the 5 have holes and the tarnish is only on those 3 and only where the air was in direct contact. hope this helps Edit: I really must proofread better before posting
