1955 D Lincoln Cent - Error? - Coin Community Forum

katzin New Member United States 8 Posts	Posted 01/16/2014 12:37 pm Hi guys! I am very new to this so I apologize in advance if my question/post is stupid! But I wanted to see if anyone could help me out with this 1955 D Lincoln Cent; specifically, the line/bar connecting the 9 and the 5 of the date. I have been reading information regarding die breaks and chips; however, the images that I have seen for breaks and chips appear to be more like distorted "blobs" where as the anomaly on this cent appears to be "clean" (for lack of a better word...or proper coinage term). To me it looks like it could be a part of the D of the mint mark located semi horizontal between the 9 and 5...but, like I said, I don't really know what I'm doing yet LOL!! SOOOO I could and most likely am wrong about that! In any event, I personally think that it is cool no matter if it is worth anything or not, but I would love to get any input, advice and/or opinions regarding this! katzin New Member United States 8 Posts	Posted 01/16/2014 3:39 pm I hate to be a bother, but what exactly is a gouge?....Clearly if this is one I will now know what one looks like in the future (which I very much so thank you for :o) But what do I need to look for in future to identify a gouge? John1 Moderator United States 56855 Posts	Posted 01/16/2014 4:56 pm A die gouge is when the coin die gets damaged in some way leaving an indent that will show up as a raised line on the minted coin.A die crack will look irregular and a gouge will look smother.Hope this makes sense.
