1898 Morgan Dollar Possible Error Coin

nikkinoodle New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 08/20/2015 8:16 pm I believe my 1898 Morgan silver dollar has a error mark on it, but I can not find anything online. Wondering if any one is aware of it? If you look on the front of the coin (pic uploaded) right below the hair line towards the back of the head at the bottom there is a marking. moxking Rest in Peace United States 17900 Posts	Posted 08/20/2015 8:38 pm It is what we call "railroad tracks" which simply means, as previously described, that another Morgan hit your coin with it's edge and left that mark. Report this Post to the Staff

Morgan dollars were shipped from the Mint in $1000 bags, and as those bags (over 60lbs each) got tossed around, coins clanged against each other inside. This mark is what happens when the edge of one coin hits the face of another with that kind of weight behind it - the reeding gouges into the other. Here, the striking coin came from the direction of the 8 in the date, and gouged towards the rim, leaving those classic triangular cuts. Report this Post to the Staff
