Hello , if you like to collect a certain series, buy a couple coin albums and buy a good reference book for that series. Lincolns are always good to start with thats where everybody started.

I haven't read all the reponses here yet so someone may have mentioned this already, but I would like to recommend that you visit the US Mint's website. In addition to being able to purchase new coins directly from the mint, its very educational as well. Because your son is so young now, he may really appreciate some of the sets the mint is offering today when he gets older. And who can resist a new shiny proof coin anyway! Seems you picked a good hobby to get into at a very exciting time with the quarter program fully matured and the presedential dollar program getting off the ground. You came to the right place for advice. All the poeple on this forum have always been very helpful and courteous when I've posted questions or concerns! Here's the link to the mint:

Welcome and enjoy!

Brandon,

I just went through the other posts right after I posted above and saw you already visited the US Mints site and made some purchases. Good for you! You mentioned that you will make the purchases annually. I don't know if you saw it or not, but they have a subscription program where they will send you the coins annually so it saves you the trouble of ordering them. This is a great feature, but a word of caushon, make sure you log onto the US Mints website every once in a while or they will assume your inactive (at least that's what they told me over the phone and they mentioned once a month would be a good interval to log on.). So I try to make a point of at least logging on once a week. It works out well and keeps me up to date.

MorganNoob, what are you going to do with your username when you have, like, 2000 posts on the forum?

I dunno, I thought about that a few days ago. I guess that I will have to live with it.

I hadn't heard about that! What a great idea! I think I'll get signed up for that right away.
Thanks!

From 1968 until 1974, the San Francisco mint did indeed make business strike Lincoln Memorial Cents, so you will find 1968-S~1974-S Lincolns in circulation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Are all the coins minted at SF within those dates assumed to be proofs?

Welcome

I ,too, am fairly new to collecting even though I had lots and lots of coins in boxes that my dad left us--I was never interested and then the BUG bit me! I became over whelmed with trying to decide which coins to start with--then I decided the good ole cents made sense (Lincoln wheaties and Memorial cents). I will help work on nickels (as my hubby is now hooked on those). But I am concentrating on the cents for now. Also, go to ebay and buy some Dansco albums--I found--so far--that even with the shipping they are the lower costing over several other places I have looked. Good luck and there is so much to learn!

I still find the Cherrios Sacagawea dollar story fascinating--look it up--your son will enjoy it!

Until 1968, the Philadelphia Mint was responsible for nearly all official proof coinage. In 1968, it took over most proof-coinage production from Philadelphia, and since 1975, it has been used solely for proof coinage, with the exception of the Anthony dollar and a portion of the mintage of cents in the early 1980s. (These cents are indistinguishable from those minted at Philadelphia.)
I think he was saying that the san francisco mint made coins from 1968 to 1974 that were proofs and made for circulation. Anything with s mint mark before 1968 is not proof just regular business strike

No. Lincoln Cents minted in San Francisco from those dates could be business strike or proofs. The business strikes are released for circulation, the proofs were put into sets and sold to collectors. Starting in 1975, all Lincoln Cents from San Francisco were proofs.

You will find proofs in circulation sometimes, but they were placed there by mistake: someone inherited/found/stole a proof coin from a collector, did not know what it was, and spent it.

Do a jig anyway!

Finding old stuff is always fun. You probably did not have any if you just started collecting, and now you do!

Keep searching!
