Environmental damaged .... It could be a lot of things ... those coins were exposed to something.
Could have been in some brackish water a short time ..then recovered by a guy with a metal detector.
Could have stored in a bag that got wet/damp
The list could be endless...

These coins are fairly new, so probably enviro damage.
Many old coins get toning like this, they are sometimes called "circulation cameo" as an affectionate term from collectors.

I agree it is environmental damage of some kind.Could be a metal detector find or maybe they were in a fire.Not an error or variety,they are spenders...IMHO. John1

I will say environmental exposure rather than damage because that half dollar looks pretty cool.  The quarter might find improvement after being a pocket piece for a while. They will not make you rich, but they are certainly fun.

Tell us, if you rub them with a finger, does anything at all come off?
