Dear friends,
Are the coins from the same dies?

I would say they are from a different set of dies.

Too many points of similarity to not be from the same origin
I have been finding a few matches lately I never even realized I had !
Nice thing to keep intact
Breaking up twins would be unconscionable

When I try to determine whether two coins are a die match, I look at details like the hair in the portrait. There was no exact template to be followed, and so that rendition of the hair can be diagnostic, in my opinion. If you look through Septimius denarii with aqula reverses, and compare the curls in the obverse portrait hair, they are all over place in terms of how they are rendered:

But here's what we have with the two coins above:

Allowing for wear (on both the coins and the die) and the vagaries of time...it's a match. It's possible that the die may have been retooled at some point in the emission, which would account for very subtle adjustments (i.e. discrepancies) in some of the lettering.

I would say the reverse is a possible match, but the wear on the left coin makes it difficult to be as sure. The angles of the wings of the eagle look a bit different - even when the views are lined up in Photoshop. But that could be a result of wear.

Each engraver has a style and his coins look almost identical.

Certainly a double die match.

What I find particularly interesting (not worrying) is the reverse wear pattern that would seem to indicate that both coins were struck when the die was heavily worn as the wear would not be this common due to wear post strike.
