In Britain it's a dot if it's anywhere except where a full stop (USA period) would be. Hope this helps.

I like Space Dot better.

I imagine there were two Romans making their first coin die and one said to the other "Hey, there's too much space between these words, what do we do now?" And the other one looked up at the night sky and saw a bunch of dots, so he said , "Just put a dot in between them. We'll call it a Space Dot if anyone asks."
