Renniks 29th edition have a guide how to grade early Florins on pages 12 and 13. This guide is very helpful to novice predecimal silver collector. I am guessing that wear occurs in the same places on all silver denominations? My question is , where does the wear first start to, occur on the silver George VI coins. The Coat of Arms is what I am focusing on as the Obverse seems much harder to grade. I have noticed that the Crown in the middle of the Queensland COA ,on the top right in the shield, is a good place to confirm wear? As well as the Kangaroos top arm that is touching the sheild, feathers on Emu, grass below, the orb and wear on the clubs? in the Big top Crown?

Thanks for the reply DBM, No , I did mean George VI from 1938 onwards, I have the Renniks Guide pictured above showing where the wear occurs for George V coins. I was after a similar picture reference or just comments for the early wear on George VI Florins. Cheers.

As no one has put forward any thoughts on this subject ,i have circled areas where I think the wear first occurs. Possibly the bunches of 4 pearls? (starting on the left side) in the top crown are a main focus? Also the ring of pearls on the outer of the crown? Where does the wear first occur? I think this coin pictured is UNC .?

I just noticed this topic, and I think it is a very pertinent question. There seems to be a wealth of information on George V grading but I haven't been able to find much in literature regarding wear points for George VI. Time for some research. Keep at it CE

Me back at it. I posted your query on the Australian Coin Forum "On CCF recently a question was asked by crab eater about what to look for when grading KGVI florins, with respect to the reverse side. In essence the OP was asking what starts to wear first? Do any of our learned members have there own way of grading this situation? The literature that I have seen mainly deals with KGV obverse markers (pearls, diamonds etc) which apply to all denominations."
Serenitystan replied "Hi ttkoo, Years ago I came across a GV1 florin where the obverse was mint uncirculated. When I looked at the reverse I noticed that the apex of the rim had a slight flattening but no wear on the device's. What I think might have happened was the coin was placed on a table with the obverse up and slid across, causing the slight wear to the apex of the rim..There's plenty of GV1 florins that look look like there's wear on the devices but are just soft strike/worn die..I always look at the rim first.."
Hopefully thats of some help.

Thanks for your efforts to help with answering my questions ttkoo. Not much info out there to help a new collector . The obverse wear is hard to judge due to the varying strikes? I can only try to go by the depth and number of hairlines on George.? This photo is of a 1951 coin showing a good strike ? Lots of hairlines that seem to have no wear? Still in its 2x2.
