I know there is value in this note. When the day comes to sell would it be beneficial to have this note professionally graded? And who would you recommend?

To get the value out would you recommend a private sale or auction?

Any thoughts on grade and value in the mean time?

EF
Damage on the left hand side, sharp fold in lower left corner, crease through the Queen, and what appears to be a couple of stains.
$1500- $2000

I would recommend BCS for certification

At auction the auctioneer will take 35%-40% of the all in price, best return if you can arrange a private sale
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

to CCF!

I agree with @DBM's assessment & just want to say it is very difficult to be certain of any grade from just a scan/photo alone. The note must be examined in person. I also feel a bit concerned about the Left & bottom borders: they seem quite slim & uneven which could indicate a trim job. It may be prudent to line it up with another 1954 note to see if they match (in size). I hope that this DF replacement hasn't been trimmed but the borders do look oddly uneven & distracting somehow.

If you do get it certified they usually can flag this & settle the matter.

Attractive note otherwise & good luck (if you decide to certify)!

I agree banknotes are difficult to determine a grade from a scan or photo's but I like this note.
I can see some of the faults mentioned above but I still think it would grade as AU and original.
I can see the rippling along the top of the note that is caused by the wet ink drying.
You can also see the embossing of the serial number on the back of the note.
I see no evidence of the note being trimmed and don't think it was.
This note may be a good candidate for PMG grading as it may even receive a low MS grade from them.
PMG is very well excepted world wide and this will attract attention from many collectors.
Personally I would use a major auction house to receive the worldwide exposure.
As for price I would be surprised if it sold for less then $3,000 in the proper auction.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Definitely worth grading, worth a few thousand at the least.
Agree with Hounddog Bill above, PMG is well accepted world wide.

You mean trimmed? It is very difficult to say & PMG very rarely provide details such as this (just lose the EPQ) as far I know. The reason it is so difficult to estimate how much one of these gets knocked down is b/c they're rarely offered & I feel it depends on where the note is auctioned (bidding war or no bidding war?). Just too many factors.

My suspicions on the trimming might just be the angle of the photo (& that's why I think it would be prudent to line up with a regular note of that era).

Also note above the furthest left hydro pole, you will see 2 light indents spots which look a lot like staple holes to me (or indents from an attempt to staple the note). The spots (indents) also match the crease observed by DBM on the front (through QEII). If they're holes, there should be no EPQ & that can knock off some hammer action.

Great eye to spot the possible stapler looking damage.

I had a closer look. There are no holes, but slight indent so possible staple bruise. In comparison to similar notes, a modified replacements as I don't have any other devils face notes to compare it to, it seems slightly smaller, so might have been trimmed.

Note came to me this way and it is what it is. Thank you for your astute observations.

The reason I asked is in the Coin World, the dreaded detail or genuine grading would wipe out at least 50% to 75% of a coins value. Currency seems to behave differently as like this note rarely seen, good luck !

*to a serious coin collector (& it is the serious coin collector who will part with the money for original undamaged TPG coins). The same could be said of a serious paper collector who has serious money to toss around. To a "newbie" or a "gap filler" type collector it may be perfect.

So the banknote with details sells to the coin collector (who isn't that serious about his coin acquisitions) just like the "coin with details" may sell to a currency collector (who may not be that serious whether the coin has issues). Plus banknote collecting is a little more new in terms of a hobby (whereas TPG came to coin collecting first).

*[These generalizations have nothing to do with the OP or OP's note].
