Hi Looking to dip my toes into the water and see about getting into coin collecting. What would be a good place to start? Something pretty interesting with coins, no longer in circulation and also nothing that will have super expensive coins that I could never afford. Like Morgan dollars are out of the question. Andrew

Start with going through loose change or a couple rolls of coins picked up at a bank. Let your curiosity take you forward. Have fun. There is no 'one way' in coin collecting.

First welcome to the community. Collect what you like and what interests you. The more you look, the more you will find. Find a coin shop or club in your area and meet others who have a similar interest. Ask a lot of questions and many around here are happy to help. Most of all enjoy.

What about Britsh coins?
Fyi change would not work since I hardly ever have cash on me, So means almost never get change to collect that way.

Quote: stay away from those "Jefferson half dollars" On one hand yes. On the other hand if someone's selling Jefferson half dollars as part of a bulk auction lot then maybe there's something good in there too. (Whoever got that lot a year ago must have ended up with a bit of a steal on that dime. Assuming it's real, anyway.)

What Tablet said. If you can find assorted lots at auction or anywhere you do find some cool stuff. I don't roll hunt from banks, but I hear its harder and harder to find things as more and more people are hunting in this way. Or maybe they are just trying to keep their "gold mines" for themselves. I do a version of it, like Tablet and buy Silver Rounds lots at auction. Pull out the cool vintage stuff and sell the generic stuff. Patience is key, but you'll find some cool stuff in no time! Collecting is so addictive! Welcome!
