Hey everyone great to be here, I'm currently in college and started collecting coins as a cool little hobby in late middle school. I've been going through alot more coins recently (roll hunting ect) and thought it was about time to more seriously pursue the hobby.

Many of us started collecting as youths trying to fill the pages of those old familiar blue Whitman folders from coins found in circulation. Once you become more educated and advanced you will find that purchasing coins will be necessary in most instances. For fun, you can still assemble collections of modern quarters and others from circulation. A good inspiration for a beginner would be to complete a type set folder. You could assemble a nice variety of older coins in nice condition to fill such a folder for under $300. Do all you can to learn about grading as condition means everything. Coin collecting for many of us has become an addiction worse than drugs or booze. Best of luck!

My addiction is a good fruit pie, but that's an entirely different story...

-Very well put @MisterT!

I would also suggest getting a hard copy catalogue. Take a look at one of these from your local library reference section (your college may have a copy). These can be purchased 2nd hand too (a few years old) & usually the relevant info doesn't change much (if you're on a budget). I found my first few copies helped me understand grades, tougher dates/varieties & even the pricing tables better. I can't imagine trying to learn all of the info I've picked up from my catalogues from any online source since they usually lack a lot of nitty-gritty background info & so much collector context that many serious collectors appreciate.

Next, you might want to upgrade your supplies, flips, binders, etc. When I started out I often put my collection in sub-standard holders so I replaced almost everything with better quality holders/binders.

The last thing I would suggest (& probably the toughest part to collecting) is just to keep consistently active. Drop into sites like CCF (& other active forums that keep you interested) on a regular bases so you can keep engaged.
