Question About Unopened, Uncirculated Bag - 1963 Canadian Silver Dollars

richpalmer New Member Canada 2 Posts	Posted 06/15/2025 5:16 pm Hi, was hoping to get some advice from the experts on here. My father has an unopened, uncirculated bag of 100 1963 Canadian silver dollars. The bag still has the untampered metal clasp holding the string at the top, keeping the bag closed. As it has never been opened, we don't actually know the condition of the coins inside. Seeing as the bag is still in excellent condition with no staining or discolouration, I suspect they are in mint condition aside from some dings and dents from the coins knocking against each other for the last 60 years. While I can find lots of information about 1963 silver dollars (and one post on here from someone in 2011 who had an opened bag of them), I've been unable to find any information about what to do with a still sealed bag. Any suggestions what to do with them, where to take them to safely get them appraised, etc.? Thanks! Report this Post to the Staff

richpalmer New Member Canada 2 Posts	Posted 06/15/2025 7:26 pm Not stored in a climate-controlled condition, but also not in a terrible one. Pretty much basic room temperature and humidity. I can't speak for how it was stored before my father acquired it, however. Report this Post to the Staff
Pacificoin Pillar of the Community Canada 5391 Posts	Posted 06/15/2025 7:55 pm They are only worth melt value with Silver this high. Bags and rolls were the craze in the early to mid 60s. Most likely they are going to be pretty baggy . Especially if they travelled any distance at all from Ottawa back in the day . Most $100 face mint sealed bags were shipped to various destinations by train without any regards to numismatic posterity. Over the years I have handled numerous bags and most, not all were no better than 60 to 62 quality . The worst ever was a mint sealed 1958 bag acquired from a Vancouver Dealer. Hammered to death, an under statement ! The best lot ever was a group of 6 bags acquired on Vancouver Island in the early 1980s from a family that had retired there from the Ottawa area. There were 2 bags of 1950 , 1 of 1951 , 1 of 1952 and 2 of 1953 . Lots of very choice coins with the exception of 1951 which were not great . That said, the most value in what you have, is the sealed mint bag of coins. If you don't open them, or break the seals, then it will fetch a solid premium above its silver value, especially in an auction.
