One of my students stopped by today and in the course of conversation mentioned he had just inherited a huge jug of coins from his grandmother. He said he was going to dump them at the Coinstar and I said"NO WAY", I told him I would buy them from him at at least face value and he asked why I would want them. I told him what I do and he got interested so, I may be getting a possible treasure trove or at least have gotten another poor soul addicted!

Keep reeling them in! Another one becomes hooked. It still amazes me how people not only dump coins in coinstar, but will often willingly pay the 8.9% fee to get cash.

People basically dont give a crap these days. All they see it the cash and coins are a burdon to most. If you can hook another person into careing thats great. I hope grand-mama stashed coins for 50+ years. Could be a lot of nice silver in there.

In this case it's inheritance, easy come, easy go! People wonder why are country is in such economic disaster, no business sense. Are grandparents were from a generation of savings and this is a generation of spending.

I just see the "one of my students" in the original post. I am a professor at a university and I would NEVER tell my students I collect coins. I "trust" them but.....not something I want to advertise in any way at all. My wife works at a university with a lot of foreign students from a lot of different places and she can get me a lot of interesting stuff, but it isn't worth it to me. Last month she brought me a Jordanian Dinar and thought I'd praise her efforts, but I scolded her!! Hmmm.... love the wife's thoughts but....can't go there.

This is a similar situation that I have with my friend. Basically, all his old stash would have certainly ended up at Coinstar or the like.
