Hi, I'm trying to identify the marks on the obverse of this 1882-O Morgan dollar. I initially thought it was a strike thru error, but due to its uniformity of pattern, started wondering if it might be some sort of misaligned or unconventional die clash (die damage with design transfer, floating die clash, or exogenous floating die clash).

Or perhaps it's some 3rd option I failed to consider?

I've tried to include photos of any & all odd markings on the reverse as well, but since they were harder to photograph, every circled area is repeated in both a close-up and magnified image.

All thoughts appreciated, thanks in advance!

Not too familiar with Morgan VAMs, but some of that looks like a clash, and some of it looks like stains.

Looks like some clash marks on the reverse - not seeing anything on the obverse.

C'mon Dearborn - you're supposed to clamp down on the screenshots as a mod -

Here are magnified images of the areas in question on the obverse that I *think* will change your mind...?

I can't make out what the images are on the obverse (staining?), but the reverse images seem to show the remnants of a clash.

I saw the same, but when I stuck it under the microscope to take this last group of shots, several areas I'd dismissed as stains turned out to be 3 dimensional with raised elements

Did you happen to look at the 2nd group of pics I posted that are all magnified sections of the obverse? And if yes, were you still unable to make out what the images are?

Thanks!

I hear you, @Dearborn, I just acquired my very first Morgan (& Peace) Dollars within the last 48 hours, and they're literally the first ones I've ever seen up close irl. So far they're pretty interesting!

Congrats on getting your first Morgans and Peace!

Obverse is just post mint damage and scratches in my opinion. Obverse clashes are usually in front of neck and behind head. The reverse does have clash marks. You could go to Vamworld online and see examples, they list the different varieties and clashes for each year and mint. On the left of home page click Morgan VAMS by date. Unless there is letter transfer with a clash, clashes don't add much extra value to a coin. But they are still fun to find and identify.

Your Morgan has some circulation wear, stains and scratches so it's not highly valuable as a collectible coin. Worn, circulated, damaged, common Morgan and Peace dollars can sell for some above melt value. Current melt value for an uncirculated Morgan or Peace is about $69.78, but this varies with daily spot prices.

Morgans and Peace are fun to collect. Just be careful, there are fakes.

In the future, please do not post photos of scope screens. Use the memory card or a USB cable to transfer images.

Images 5-9 show an interesting pattern and it dies look like there is "texture" to the metal.

The texture does resemble similar examples of different denominations that were thruck through cloth.

With that being said though, the condition of the coin may make it impossible two definitively determine that.

Here is a Morgan dollar clash overlay. See if any of the potential reverse devices line up with what you're seeing.
