As I was researching this coin I noticed that there was a difference in the obverse details of the grade 65+ and 55 images of this coin that are available on the PGCS Coin Facts web site.

The difference was in the direction of the right end of liberty's bust relative to the nearby stars. In one case it points to the bottom star and in the other it points to the second star. (I also noticed in some images this part of the bust is more rounded than in others as well.) I found that this seems to be related to the die variety.

I'd like to find more details on the differences between the different die varieties of this coin. A little digging turned up CherryPickers Guide To Rare Die Varieties of United States coins Volume 3 but the description doesn't reference this coin.

Ideally, I'd like to find a resource online to do my own research. Perhaps the book is the only option.

Any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There appear to be about a dozen varieties of the 1795 2-leaves. Perhaps NGC's VarietyPlus will help.

Thanks for the link @Zurie The PGCS site also has images for each die variety but there are no details on how to distinguish between them.

Clicking the image/See details area at the NGC site provided some additional comments in some cases but I couldn't tell if those were the distinguishing features of the die variety or just general comments.

I found a reference that has the information I was seeking.

It's titled "Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia" by Q. David Bowers published in 1993. The Flowing Hair dollars are in volume one. Volume two covers Morgan and later dollars. A great set of books.

I also found that there were descriptive excerpts from this book on the PGCS Coin Facts pages with pictures of the different die varieties. I just needed to scroll down farther on the page.
