In PCGS MS63 with none finer, this coin is a gold work of art—minted between 1209 to 1220. What's the oldest coin in your collection? Sap Moderator Australia 16941 Posts	Posted Yesterday 9:43 pm The multicultural origins of Sicily are demonstrated in this coin: the obverse is very clearly Byzantine, with Greek inscriptions imitating earlier Byzantine coins; the reverse in contrast shows a German eagle and the plain decorative design is reminiscent of Germanic coins of the period, thus linking to the king-emperor's homeland. Unlike some earlier Sicilian coins, the Islamic aspect of Sicilian society is not present on this coin; it is probably not coincidence that shortly after these coins were issued, all the Muslims were deported from the island to the mainland. I don't know if provenance of this specific coin is recorded, but Sicily was one of the few European nations making abundant gold coins during this time period. Sicilian gold coins tended to spread across Europe in trade. So theoretically, it could have been buried and dug up practically anywhere - except perhaps in the Islamic world, where these coins tended to be distrusted due to their slight debasement compared to contemporary Islamic gold coins. Unlike bronze and silver coins, it's entirely possible for a gold coin to be buried, dug up centuries later, given a quick brush-off of dirt and a wash in water, and they're rated MS. "None finer" is perhaps an empty boast, given that only two of these coins have been graded by PCGS (and both graded MS63). NAC had a spectacular sale of early Sicily gold (including this coin, then unslabbed) a year ago. I won;t say coins of this qualty are 'a dime a dozen" but they are not unusual. I suspect it spent 600 years or so in a hoard somewhere. I'll be interested to see if I can find a hoard that had examples of this type. Added: A few possibilities: 1.the 1984 Benevento hoard (estimated deposition 1278) which contained over 100 Hohenstaufen and early Angevin gold taris 2. the 1963 Gela hoard which contained an unspecified number of Hohenstaufen taris (and over 40 gold augustales of Frederick) 3. the c.1900 Lavello hoard (est'd deposition 1254 at latest), known only to have contained "many" Hohenstaufen gold taris 4. the c.1900 Agrigento hoard (est'd deposition 1258) which contained taris of Frederick and his two successors.
