I got an offer to buy this coin from an ebay user.
What do you think?

Not a fan. Why are you considering this coin in particular?
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

That coin is pretty junky...you can get lots of offers on ebay and they are usually not doing you any favors; but the price is not crazy, so I assume the offer is not terrible. For comparison though, a much better example for just a little more money--

I like the patina after the gunk is removed, but after Victor posted a better one I think I will pass.

There are few people, on this forum or elsewhere, that would actually recommend buying ancient coins off of ebay. There's simply far too many pitfalls, especially when it comes to ancients-newbies buying coins from sellers they do not already know. Marketplaces like VCoins (which is where the coin ictor posted is being offered) are more trustworthy.

And yet there are some of us who are reputable and actively use ebay as their route to selling off their excess from their collection. These are coins where there is no real viable alternate route to selling.

I frequently use ebay for buying and selling; but ebay is always a caveat emptor kind of place. As Joe at FORVM says-- "Know the coin or know the seller"

I have found ebay an invaluable asset !
And while it has its share of 'clowns' (sellers dealing in things they now next to nothing about !)
And 'comedians' (sellers listing $10 coins for $199 !
It weren't so long ago that I remember a Vcoins seller hawking LRB's with the notorious "sand patina !"
Just that all his listings had the same fake sand patina .
After buying spray painted bronzes via Switzerland I have grown skeptical of more than a few "respectable" sellers
But some of my 'favorite' pieces came by way of ebay
My Caligula 'mule'
A nifty sestertius of Elagabalus
Well over 100 tetrarchy folles
Mostly London and Trier !
Even a Judaea Capta sestertius of Vespasian

But yes one need be careful
But even the so-called reputable sources are showing ample evidence of 'corruption'

I'm afraid it's what power & money does
