The flip was helpfully labelled "quarter"

The weight is proper, so it's not missing a layer or plated over and heavy.

The coin's surface has the appearance of a naturally toned copper coin, red brown to purples. The edge has no seam.

Science experiment or truly an error? Thanks for looking.

My vote is for science experiment.

It truly doesn't appear plated. Edit: Here's a closeup and coin scope shots:

Edited edit: I don't mean to be obtuse, I'm not convinced it's a true error. Old toned-over copper plating perhaps explains the look, but it would have to have been an extremely thin and uniform plating.

I've dug up cupro-nickel coins when metal detecting that look just like this. My vote is for environmental damage.

Thanks, NumisRob

I started to lean that way thinking more about the reeding, it would still have a seam on an annealing error, I think.

I agree, on a sintered planchet you normally do not see a broad copper colors .
