I just picked this up. I thought it was a interesting advertising token. John Cheek also wrote 'The Young Angler's Guide' in 1839. It is still in print today.   |

Lovely acquisitions, everybody! But I have a few questions...
zookeeperz, what does "OE" signify in your intro to that great-looking penny?
NumisRob, I'm familiar with oak leaves all over my silver and copper tokens, but they're generally just used in wreaths that surround a denomination or coat of arms. Is this the first use of an oak branch as the main "device" on a UK coin? Aside from strength and stability, does it carry any special significance in British iconography? (I get thistles and shamrocks, etc., but oaks... )
bhmtokens, I remember hearing about an unusual admiralty case involving a craft named "John Cheek" a few years back. Something to do with trawling around the Falklands. (Just to show how close we can all come to immortality...just open a shop and write a book!)
My contribution this week is this 1811 silver shilling token from Barnstaple in Devonshire -- likely a municipal issue, as they're still striking tokens to this day, albeit aluminum 5p pieces. (Dalton 1, EF, R.)
