1798 Dollar - Which Die Marriage? - Coin Community Forum

Dash1963 New Member France 6 Posts	Posted 09/06/2026 10:26 am Hello DB dollar experts, I have just bought this 1798 DB large eagle dollar as part of a lot. I know nothing about early dollars, but it appears genuine. What I always do if I happen to get an early US coin and want to help identify it is to check out the variety on PCGS and NGC, but I cannot find this particular die marriage. The closest thing to what I have found is the PCGS Photograde G06 example (which happens to be a 1798, and matches mine closely) but I cannot find that in the list of varieties either. Dash1963 New Member France 6 Posts	Posted 09/06/2026 4:41 pm Thanks for the replies - it is the correct weight, size, edge lettering, & it 'rings' true for a silver dollar - BUT, I haven't any experience with early dollars... having researched it on PCGS & NGC (until my eyes almost fell out & my head was about to explode), apart from the die marriage, I have to say that everything checks out... although I do see what westensky means about the date being 'funny' by comparison to the rest of the coin... Dash1963 New Member France 6 Posts	Posted Yesterday 07:34 am Thanks everyone - I think I am going to have to accept this one's for the curio box..! @adam126402, the date does coincide with the 1798 close date variety BB-118 & BB-119, but the stars and LIBERTY spacing is wrong - the reverse appears to be completely correct & matches the 1798 GO6 example on PCGS Photograde (can't seem to see it anywhere else). I can upload edge lettering pics if you are interested, but I will have to accept there are too many problems with this to be genuine. Didn't cost much, and it was never going to be worth much even if genuine, being G06 at best and heavily cleaned/abraded... Report this Post to the Staff

Dash1963 New Member France 6 Posts	Posted Today 3H 46M ago Thanks Dearborn - no, didn't pay much - and to be honest, I'd prefer to have a bit of a mystery on my hands than a low value hohum poor condition DBLE dollar that I'd stick in an album somewhere & forget about... Sure, this may be some cheap modern fake, but I really don't think so - too much is correct as far as I can tell - weight, size, 'ring', edge lettering & the reverse is totally genuine IMHO - it's the obverse that's so darn squinty - date is weird, although correct for at least a few of the close date varieties, but the stars & LIBERTY are not right either (although nothing very wrong there, just don't match any obverse dies I can see). If it's a counterfeit of the era, or indeed the last century, then that's fascinating in and of itself - if it's a basically genuine dollar that's been altered or repaired (as per the speculation of westernsky), then why did anyone go to the trouble?!? Anyhow, thanks for those who took the trouble to take a look & give feedback - I know I don't post much, but I love this site & community. Report this Post to the Staff
