If it looks as good as those pics, you did fantastic! I agree with JimR's grade, not the one on the slab. (I peeked)

Thanks Steve! I was excited too. JimR - It was graded by NGC. I have been accumulating a few TPG graded quarters to train myself on. This is my first MS64 and I have some MS65 and just picked up a MS63 the other day. I'd get a MS66, but I can't really justify the nearly double the price tag of a 65 to myself or my wife. For this NGC MS64 I'm thinking that the ding below the E in LIBERTY is what brings this coin down to 64. Otherwise, It's great! Thanks for your grades. I look forward to being able to buy these raw one day and know what I'm getting. Troy |

That ding probably held it back...but they've put 65 labels on coins with worse dings than that, in more prominent locations.
Maybe the pics are hiding some hits.

I'd have graded it a 64 and see that it was. The ding below E is definitely distracting with it being right in the center. Looks to be a small hit below the eye and a few nicks on the neck. Is that a hit on the eagle's breast?
An honest 65 should have no hits on portrait or eagle IMO
I think it is an attractive 64 and am sure it looks far better in hand (not that it looks bad here but I know that thing is bright).

I have a pretty good Washington quarter collection. I stopped adding to it when the State Quarter program made buying these coins prohibitive. I think that the contact marks as well as the lack of bold detail on the breast feathers of the eagle were enough to keep this coin from grading above MS 64. There also appears to be contact marks on Washington's jaw and a significant ding at 12 o'clock on his head that detract. On the plus side, the obverse fields on this coin are better than many of the MS 66 coins that I have and the tonging adds some nice character. If you are looking for coins in the MS 64-65 range, I would avoid graded coins and shop your local coins stores and coin shows for bargains. The real premiums are being paid for the MS 66+ coins. |

Thanks snowman. That's exactly my plan, though I must admit that currently I find myself not able to grade very well in hand. Given the variance in the strike strength, I sometime can't even tell between AU and BU on the obverse. I try to use the hair roll behind the ear as my first point of investigation. However, on some there is much detail and on others there is hardly any. I have been "settling" for super clean fields on the obverse.
Additionally, I have a blast looking at the die cracks that seem to pervade this series. I never would have thought they happened given the low low relief, but they do and they are pretty cool.
