Rarest 1859 Cent Variety: Nine Over Inverted Nine

canadian-varieties Pillar of the Community Canada 1442 Posts	Posted 05/26/2011 1:53 pm Just grabbed this one for $120. Mislabeled as a double 5, 9, I believe it may actually be the rarest variety of all the 1859 cents, known as the 9 over inverted 9 :). Thoughts? Report this Post to the Staff

nybird Valued Member United States 459 Posts	Posted 05/26/2011 3:11 pm Speaking as the buyer of quite a few "Phantom loop 59's" I would agree with Zonad on this one (even though his avitar wears thick glasses). You won't need a third party grader to tell you. Once you have it in hand it will be obviously 9/6 or a Hall 9 (the other 59 with a loop) I actually have a 9/6 and it is very obvious in hand. Even if it is not 9/6 it still looks like a nice coin. Report this Post to the Staff

The pic Zonad posted is probably the finest example of the featured 9/6. Unfortunately the pic starting this thread is not an example of either of the known 9/6 varieties.
