I have a couple of rolls of uncirculated 1963 Jefferson nickels. in hand they have mirror finishes but the eye never sees the same detail as the camera. So what grade would you give this example?

Is this your best finish? I love the luster but it has too many hits to be a high grade MS. I would call this an MS-63 or MS-64 coin.

MS-63 tops.
How did there get to be so many minor hits and scratches on the coin? Was this a 1963 that actually circulated a bit, but was taken out very early on in, say, 1963-1965...but still maintained all its luster and didn't really get any wear so its still technically a BU.
It may also have come from an original BU roll where the owner/dealer routinely just dumped the nickels out and threw em back in.

i must completely dissagree with the fellas above. this is a AU 50. It has quite heavy nicks and dents. I see many xf coins with less wear.
Its a nice coin but theres no way ever its MS. It has clearly been getting banged around and for a good bit.

Quote: How did there get to be so many minor hits and scratches on the coin? I'm betting that the coin in hand looks amazing! I can see the cartwheel luster. It's an MS coin imho. MS 63 is my guess. Welcome to the age of digital photographs. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that "nicks, hits, and dents" are the same as scratches and/or wear. The luster on this coin tells me that it is still in MS condition. Then again...what the heck do I know...I collect Lincolns... That's a nice nickel nohope...

they all look uncirculated or close, I would say those nicks and scratches are bag marks or being stored with other coins.

Do you know what an XF Jefferson looks like? You have seen XF Jeffersons with less wear than this coin. The coin does not have any HEAVY nicks. The many minor nicks are NOT wear. There is no wear on this coin. There is no lack of luster on this coin. I don't think you have any idea how to grade this coin at all. You call it a AU-50, thus implying wear and barely any luster left, don't you see the cartwheel. Then you say it has more wear than an XF, so why not just call this coin a VF. Yep, this is a VF nickel.

Looks like this topic is stirring up some nice discussion. I have filtered all three lights through a sheet of white paper I have to up the exposure to 1/10 of a second I could probably have gone higher.

If nothing else this tread is teaching me that photography can make a great coin look bad and a bad coin look Great.. I think I'll call it quits for the night and try again in the morning at 1/5th of a second or longer.

Even as much as sensitive digital photography overemphasizes marks on a coin, I cannot see how this can be seen as anything other than a fully MS coin. The first set shows the luster best IMO and there are clearly no luster breaks which equates to no wear. This nickel should be an absolute lock for MS63. The following is the official ANA definition for MS63 and this coin meets or slightly exceeds the description- Quote: Mint luster may be slightly impaired. Numerous small contact marks and a few scattered heavy marks may be seen. Small hairlines may be visible without magnification. Several detracting scuff marks or defects may be present throughout the design or in the fields. The general quality is about average, but overall the coin is rather attractive.

Thanks for posting the image. I have some fantastic looking Jeffersons that I'm considering having graded. My best ones have maybe one tiny tiny hairline scratch on the obverse which makes me think I have no hope of MS67 or MS67* which is what I'm gunning for.

OK one more shot then I will lay this to rest. I upped the exposure to 0.3 seconds Used the same three filtered lights. Here is the original coin And here is the next one in the roll
