i also corresponded with the seller - he has now edited this item description to say it is gold plated, still WAY overpriced, I have seen these gold plated 1977 50c selling in markets for around $12 to $15. There were a lot of them made in the late seventies for jewelry / pendants, to I do believe that it is actually plated rather than just toned.

floridapalms, ebay does seem inconsistent in dealing with reports, but they did remove the fake mule I posted about on here. While it wont work every time it is worth telling them. In my opinion, if someone pays too much for an item and they know what they are getting, then that is between the buyer and the seller. If someone says incorrect things about an item and the buyer is deceived, then the seller has done something wrong.

Note that he's decided that the 50c is not gold, it's actually gold plated.

I note that the auction finished with no bids. And he has re-listed it again finishing in about three and a half hours - again, no bids (same opening bid of 150 and BIN of 250). I email him and said I had just bought a similar one (which I have) for $23 and would offer him the same... guess what he said?
as an interesting aside, I have been investigating gold plating - seems simple enough and there are many DIY kits available... think I might give it a go sometime... think I will start with a '77 Jubilee 50c!

Gold plating experiment update: And here is a 2009 solid gold to compare - not so obvious in the pictures but in the flesh the solid gold coin is a much richer buttery colour. The 2009 is also a proof...
