What do you guys think of the 1859 Brass cent up for auction at Torex. I don't mean to be out of line but, "Some minor spots of corrosion"? . This description sort of bothers me. I know this is a very rare coin, but?
Your opinions please on this Brassy

This time you should wait. Seeing it in the pic I would never label it brass. Yes, it has the ICCS endorsement but when a coin looks this bad is that enough?

When it comes to this coin some people don't seem to care whether it is corroded or not. Last year, one sold on ebay for 14.5 k and it was a corroded VG.

Would there be a way to remove a.l that gunk. It does look like a nice F12 underneath?

that gunk is actually corrosion. I'm pretty sure there's no way you can do this without seriously affecting the value of the coin

How does ICCS determine if this is a real "BRASS" 1859?

I mean, if they have a hard time with cleaned coins, or PVC residue, how could they possibly determine a "BRASS" 1859?

I would love to stick it under the XRF at work... I am curious as heck what the actual composition is...

If I could afford it I would buy it, cut it out, test it and then repackage it in it's holder. Because no harm done?

And if it turns out its NOT a 1859 brass cent, ICCS will be happy to re-attribute it as 1859 brass.

Wait...you ARE a major Canadian dealer, right? ;)
