Have an opportunity to add this one to my Dansco album for the coming grandchild. My goal is to collect as many higher grade Morgan silver dollars as time and finances allow in order to give the grandchildren something tangible when I pass on. Local coin store owner was kind enough to let me bring it home to photograph it. (Yes, he is a great fellow to deal with and trusts me to bring it back)
Not formally graded by TPG, but I'm leaning toward MS-64 or possibly even MS-65, which would mean a big leap in value. The coin itself is very pleasing to the eye, with some some nice toning around the rim that is not easily captured in camera. The main detraction, for me, are the small spots on the reverse....but I can get past that for the right price, I suppose.
What say you, CCF experts ? Would you characterize this coin as "investment quality" for collecting purposes ? While it isn't a key date or anything special, it is a nice Morgan that could fill a hole in my album.
And now, the photos : Edited by CitizenPatriot 10/20/2011 12:05 pm

I wouldn't bother TPGing it, but yeah, it looks at a minimum MS-64 from these photos.

Undoubtedly MS-64, and has a very strong shot at 65. It would only depend on how a TPG chose to evaluate the mark below Liberty's lips.

Thanks, SuperDave. I value all opinions, as it helps me learn to be an informed collector. I doubt I'll have her graded, but determining a grade will undoubtedly help determine a final price offer. Thanks again !

At least a 64 with a good possibility of a 65. Nice coin!

It's good that you have built a trusting relationship with your local dealer. Good luck in negotiating the final price now that you know the grade.

Very nice dollar, good details and exceptionally clean, I would agree with others that it is a minimum 64 and possibly a 65, really a tough one for me to call for sure. I used to own a half dozen 1885-P's in the exact same condition as this one, and sold them years ago, wish I had them back now. Morgans in this condition are just gorgeous.

Quote: It's good that you have built a trusting relationship with your local dealer. Yeah, he has been patient with me during the initial learning curve, and has offered his opinions on different coins when asked. The store itself is small, but gets lots of traffic, so I try to limit my questions when possible. There are a half-dozen or so employees, but only two that I've dealt with personally, and one is the owner's son. I've been there enough that when I come through the door, one of them usually reaches for the big box of Morgans and plops it in front of me as I sit down at the counter.....now THAT'S service ! He also gave me the acrylic easel used in those photos, and hinted that we might do some bartering for photographic services....my new slogan - "will work for Morgans !"
