Hello everyone, I really like this Morgan dollar, and I think it has a lot of eye appeal. It's far from a "monster," but is that what the ultimate standard is for getting a star/plus? I think more subtle toning should qualify, too. Do you think this coin was close to getting a star? Extra points if you call the grade correctly!

Nice looking coin, I'd give it a 63 as I can't get past the bagmarks on the cheek and marks in the left obv field. I'd be just a little surprised if it made 64 from a top TPG.

Very nice coin! It has very nice toning but not enough of it to give it a star. The morgans that I typically see with a star are ones where the majority of at least one side of the coin is toned in beautiful rainbow colors or a coin where one side has a higher degree of reflectivity than the other side for example one side is PL and the other side is DMPL. As for grade, I agree with southsav, MS-63.

Very impressive SouthSav and D0ubl3Eagle--it's in an NGC MS63 holder! I believe it is a so-called "Battle Creek" coin, though it doesn't say so on the label.

I should have mentioned this in my last post but I was tired and forgot to. NGC gives out stars for exceptional eye appeal which can include the descriptions that I mentioned in my last post. I am not completely sure but I think each grader has assign the star or the coin won't get the star. With the plus those are given to coins that are high end for the grade. Chris12018- Beautiful coin!

MS-63... The reverse is a solid MS-64, but the obverse holds it back a little... Possible star designation candidate...

Thanks for the nice comments! Chris, from the pics, your coin looks like a candidate for MS63PL...why do you think they went with the star instead?

I think it has some small issues which held it back from locking in a MS64 grade, but a fabulous coin for an MS63 grade, so the star is given...This could well be a candidate for a DMPL designation they with held so gave it a star instead...

Mine has some chatter on the cheek. It has highly reflective surfaces, but the raised areas are consistent w/ the the rest of the coin as far as finish Quote: Can you post some close up Thanks...pic's of the date, and the reverse STATES OF please? Is there something I may be missing?

I think they went with the star because the obverse of the coin met the criteria for a PL or a DMPL but the reverse did not meet the PL criteria. This date is often found with semi-prooflike surfaces which might be what they thought the reverse is.
