I'm interested to know what you guys think of this Mercury. The date is 1916, and I've been pretending to myself that there's a D mintmark hiding underneath all that wear. Plausible? Thanks! danny Image: md1916.jpg87.94 KB

Here are a couple more tries, natural sunlight and my lamp, from different vantages. Still not very clear, I'm afraid. Too much coffee this morning. Thanks for the welcomes, and happy holidays to you! Image: md1916a.jpg94.49 KB Image: md1916d.jpg83.24 KB

I believe not, unfortunately. I've been cruising them on Heritage for the last few minutes, and all of the ones I saw had the mintmark extending into the unworn area on your coin.

Hi thelostworld
Im afraid that your going to have to settle for 1916-P on this one ,,Sorry I was hoping for you that it was a 16-D.
Nice to have you here with us !! Hope you stick around and share some of your Coins and Knowledge with us !!

I believe you're right. By superimposing other dimes with clear mintmarks, I can see that it's not likely. But wouldn't it be nice to find The Key in pocket change, where this poor abused dime was found?
thanks again!

Dave is right, the Mint mark on most of the 16-D's is rather high and tucked up in the notch formed by the fasces and the lowest leaves,, for the cent collectors who also collect Merc's, the mint mark is the same as that of the 14-D Lincoln Cent, the same punch was used on two of the four reverses for the 16-D although it cannot be use as a conclusive authenticator since two other reverses exist it can be used as a starting point. I thought that I had one also, sent it to ANACS, now I have a 1916P Merc, slabbed FA-02. The most expensive 1916 P Merc for that grade around.
