I have an 1887 Indian Head penny, that at first glance appears to be flattened by someone placing on railroad tracks. At a closer look I noticed it probably wasnt flattened, as the diameter is the same as other Indian Head cents.

I decided to weigh it against another 1887 penny, and it weighs 1.5 grams, compared to the normal 3.0 grams.

Is this some sort of error? or can someone with some insight explain this?

It might have been dunked in something corrosive, like acid or vinegar.

If acid were the case, the litters on the head of the penny would be smaller, and less visible.

I can read it just fine, and the thin penny looks to have wider letters than the normal 1887 penny, meaning it cannot be from acid or corrosion.
