Would you bid, if there wasn't a "photo"?
Imagine an auction that had random 50% photos of the items, and otherwise, merely loose descriptions of the items (oh, and expensive +$1000 items) ...
ummm? => awesome prices, but would "you" bid on the unknown box? (that's a lets' make a deal thingy) Edited by stevex6 10/26/2011 10:52 pm

No, unless there was a 100% money back guarantee and the prices werent too great. If they were too cheap than they might be LYING!

I would never bid on an unknown box. That's a waste of money. I have bid on auctions without pictures before. For example a set of silver quarters without the 1932-d and s. I didn't need pictures to determine the value.

The only thing I would consider bidding on is silver or gold coins and I would bid melt at the most. Even if the seller is being completely honest, every coin is different and what looks great to you may not to me. Maybe you like toning and I like blast white. Or the particular pattern of bag marks on one coin might bug me to no end and it would make no difference to you. This is especially true if it is a high value coin like you are talking about.

yah, I agree ... I am only going to bid on the items that have photos (too bad though, because the one item that I've always "really" wanted is listed, but there isn't a photo ... but yes, it is quite expensive and too big of a gamble, sight unseen) ...
thanks for responding

NO. No more than buying a car, house, boat, plane, etc sight unseen. Makes no Cents.

Try requesting a photo from the seller. Tell him/her you are interested in the item and would like to see several pictures of it in order to bid on it. If the seller refuses or ignores you know the item is a wet dog.

Nope, not at all. If it's something I really want, then I'll ask for photos.

Normally I don't even look at ones without photos but if it is something I want and I am in the mood to gamble then I might put in a low bid.

If I personally know the auctioneer, perhaps. If ebay, forget it. Too many fakes have been laundered by this method.

Well, I stuck to my guns and did "not" bid on the photo-less items (I asked for photos beforehand, but nobody ever got back to me, so I bailed on those "mystery" items) ..... but people did bid on them ... so sadly, I'll never know if they were diamonds in the rough, or pieces of garbage?

Sometimes you have to pay for that kind of information, just make sure it's money you can loose. I just bought 3 walkers unseen, and I'm very happy with the purchase. Read the feedback and had an email conversation first though. I asked for a pic on one of the coins (16s walker) after price negotiation and it was slightly better than his description. Basically be careful and make good judgements.

Unless I was buying coins at melt, I would not. However, sometimes a very poor photo can be a home run. Few people gravitate towards bidding up a coin with poor picture quality. Some dealers take excellent photos and their product seems to demand a slight premium bc the coin looks so good relative to others listed in the same grade

I normally won't buy a coin unless I see it in hand, certainly anything valued at more than 50 bucks.
With ancients, hammered or milled coins, thar ain't no other way.
UNLESS
As I have said above, the dealer has an international reputation.
