Hi I just recently started collecting and I'm eyeing a couple coins that I may buy. Unfortunately I'm not yet skilled in determining the quality of coins. I need coin grading help.

Both are priced the same so which one is better?

hmmm...but which one is better? I think the second one is more detailed but the dirt concerns me. I'm not sure if it's permanent or uncleaned.

Hello DIC.. I cant help you with that since I'm still new in this hobby.. But maybe someone else can help you..I just feel great to have a "kababayan" here. I would like to have coin like yours or older ones but I cant seem to find a decent store. Could you at least tell me where you buy your coins? Thanks..

i only know of one. Old Treasures in megamall. it's expensive but the ones I see online, once you've added the shipping costs, are comparatively the same with the store. in that case it's better to buy it in the store because at least you get to examine it yourself and chance of getting duped is less. some are even cheaper than the ones I see online.

For instance, 50c 1885 alfonso. online 1k plus at the store P700. these two isabela coins are actually cheaper at the store P300-400. people online who are not familiar with the market rate in our country tend to get greedy and jack up the prices a bit. so far this store is my only point of reference to the market price of philippine coins. do you know of any books?

I'm also just starting the same as you. but I intend to rely on building on my personal networks to get good bargains. ask relatives, friends etc for old coins especially old people . I ve gotten some for free. coin collecting is not very popular in our country so it's easy to negotiate bargain prices from people who are not in the coin business.

Personally, I'd prefer the top one. Any possible improvement in "technical grade" (wear) is more than offset by the unattractive coloration, which may even be categorized as corrosion.

I've seen silvers with brown-black gunk on them like on the bottom one; the brown stuff just doesn't shift - you can polish it till the rest of the coin is blast white and the brown just stays there. Not a pretty sight. [XX(]

i was afraid of the exact same thing. the 2nd has less wear but the color really worried me. I dont think I can get it off. thanks for the info. you made my decision easier.

I'd grade the first coin as VF. The second coin looks like it was dug up and still has some caked on dirt on it. Try soaking it in some olive oil for a few days and see if any of the dirt falls off.
