A couple weeks ago, I picked up a lot on ebay and there was a terribly encrusted Barber half dollar in the lot. I basically am into this coin for melt, or about $13.50. It would never grade because of the PVC damage, but I'm curious as to what technical grade you think I may have garnered had it been better cared for.

SuperDave will agree. Coin photography is all about light. After we're done discussing technical grade, I'll publish the pictures of the coin that bely the surface damage. They say that the only cure for this condition is to not contract the disease. I'll let you know more about that as time wears on. I am working on a technique to repair surfaces on worthy coins that have been damaged in this manner.

Oh yeah .... Cleaned does not begin to describe what had to be done to this coin. The third image is of the coin as presented in the ebay listing.

The details look XF+ or AU50 from here.

The right obverse field shows the problems the most. The rest of the coin looks pretty good in the images.

That's where the lighting is tricking you. The damage on the obverse is primarily on the cheek and the trunk of the neck.

Harsh is such an angry word ... the scratches and contact marks you see were there when I got the coin. While it was subjected to various solutions, I used no abrasive technique at all. In hand ... you can't see the scratches like you can in the jpeg. They become obvious under intense lighting and at this level of magnification.
