Another coin that I dipped in olive oil in the hopes that I can ID it. Unfortunately the soaking and subsequent brushing didn't help much. Maybe, just maybe this one isn't a lost cause, and we can successfully ID it. As impossible as it sounds, after straining my eyes looking at the obverse inscription under some light, I think this one may be a Valentinian I or II.

I think it's Theodosius.

It could be Theodosius, but what leads you to say that?

The style looks a bit like Crispus to me.

I too would go for Valentinian I. I think the Obv legend has around 20 characters in it and I also think it has a legend break above the head. This rules out most other claimants, except VII of course.

Not much more can be seen on the Obv, except perhaps 'TIN' at about 11 O'clock?

The Rev too is difficult but I think this coin could have had something in the left field, little of it remains but there is a kind of '+' still there. Not certain but the way the captives head is positioned very close to the Emperors hip is indicative of something having been in the left field, generally the captive was moved to the right slightly to help fit the mark in and balance the look of the coin. I don't see anything in right field but that's not to say it was always like this.

As far as the MM goes I think I see an 'S' but its hard to tell if this is the 3rd character of a 3 character MM or the 4th of a 5 (hope that makes sense). I 'maybe' also see a 'T' one character before the 'S'.

A lot of assumptions to get this far but if I had to guess I'd probably go for some thing like RIC IX Trier 5b type I (b) (Star in LF and TRS MM)

I'll see if I can find some pics.

Wow. Great job bobby! Even if they are assumptions, they do make sense. And yeah, I think (from looking at Trier 5a on Wildwinds), 5b may be a match for my coin.

As shaky an attribution as this one is I'd add it anyways to my spreadsheet. Thanks bobby!
