I was wondering if you all thought that this coin is a SMTSA. Your comments would be appreciated

So far from what I can find Thessalonica only minted these commemorative coins at the 4th(delta) officina and the 5th (epsilon)..... helvetica's list.

The LRBC is not really a help in this respect.

I don't have the RIC and am also wondering if the RIC lists an issue from the 1st officina.

Otherwise I figure this is yet another example of a delta issue looking like an alpha issue.

If you have the RIC for this coin please let me know if there is an SMTSA listed.

Thanks
Regards
doucet

4 and 5 no 1. This is the style delta in use there and then.

Also a hint: when seeking Constantinopolis and Urbs Roma coins, it helps to weigh the coin. RIC separates out the heavy ones (over 2g.) that were issued with the two soldiers/two standards coins from the lighter ones that accompanied the two soldiers/one standard coins. This looks to be a heavy one but it is not easy to tell from a photo. In this case it makes no real difference since neither is listed as an A but that will not hold for every mint and every mark.

Thanks for your input Doug.

I thought this was probably the case but wanted and expert opinion before I filed it away in the Delta area.

There is a great deal to learn about the styles used on these late roman coins... For a beginner anyway.
