Turned on the radio this morning and there was a commerical for RCM and since I had the day off I decided a trip to the RCM in Winnipeg was in order.

It was my first time being there since grade school in the '80s. A very cool place for a coin nut like me. I think I see another trip there in the near future. Maybe take a tour of the place next time.

They are doing a straight exchange of the 2011 Boreal Forest Toonies (max 5 per person) today and tomorrow.

I hope I didn't drool too much.

Yeah, I already ordered my toonies!
Still waiting on my order of Loonies though...it's been over 3 weeks! I've already found 3 in change in Toronto.

Yah, I went to the Winnipeg mint this summer (my wife's parents live in Winnipeg) ... but we made the mistake of going to the mint on Saturday, so the plant wasn't actually running (but they still toured us through the place to look at the machines and the girl explained everything, etc, but it would have been far more impressive if the plant was actually running) ....

NOTE => sadly, no matter what day that you tour the mint, you don't get to actually go into the plant itself, so wearing my magnetic coin-attracting boots was a waste of time.

Still sounds like a cool trip though.

Now, if I can only convince the wife to go for the 13 hour drive from Calgary...lol!

Glad you had fun CoinCanuck! It's a very advanced manuafacturing facility. In fact, Winnipeg's high-speed circulation presses can produce 20 million coins each day. That's 750 coins per second! It's also where we produce coins for over 70 countries in the world! How many people here knew THAT?

I did ... there is also a flag in front of the mint for every country that has its coins minted at the Winnipeg mint (do I win a bunch of free coin stuff?)

That probably explains the current quality of the circulation strikes we see now. They pale in comparison to the quality of the strikes the RCM produced in the 1960s and 1970s (at least that is my opinion).

RCM - I was also aware of the mint making coinage for the other countries.

I would also agree with SPP's opinion.

But I do understand that it is a business, and that the mint must make money (figuratively and literally).

Well yes, those flags as you drive into the Winnipeg Mint are a bit of a hint! Forgot they were there as I'm based in Ottawa.

Hi Royal Canadian Mint,
Was wondering if you could comment on if the RCM is going to have future straight exchange programs of new coins? 50 cent coins.

Thanks.

Hi CoinCanuck, to my knowledge, coin exchange programs are a part of every new circulation coin launch. The new online coin exchanges are proving to be VERY popular and they're nice because they are accessible to anyone with an internet connection (which is most people these days). We also try to have physical launches in fitting locations --- by fitting I mean a location that ties into the theme of the coin. For example, in addition to recent Toonie coin exchanges at all 3 of our boutiques (Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver), we also hosted an exchange in Banff Centre as part of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival.

Does this answer your question?

It sure does! Thanks RCM.
Another thing to do some research on and keep my eyes open for! Makes coin collecting more fun!
