So I put my bid in at my max. At the time I was about 40% over the current price and with in 2 minutes of closing another bidder comes along and out bids me by $1.00. I did not want the coin that bad so let it go. About 30 seconds after the auction closed I get an email from ebay about a "Second Chance" saying either the top bidder couldn't pay for the coin or the seller had another coin. It made me wonder if I was bidding against the seller. Am I off track here or is this happening?

Buyers backing out happens pretty often; I've worked my way down through the 3rd-4th bidders before with the 2nd chance offer. If you want it, grab it.

This may be a practice of SHILL BIDDING. The seller (or someone working with the seller) jacks the price up so your (or the 2nd highest bidder) maximum bid is obtained, and if the seller will accept your high bid, it's sold. It happens quite a bit. If you want it for your high bid, take it. If not...let it go.

Look around on ebay and elsewhere and see if you can get the same or better coin for less. If so, don't take the second chance offer. I got a second chance offer a while back. In the few days between the end of the auction and the second chance offer I realized I could do better elsewhere so I just let it expire.

I did grab the coin at the second chance price as that was my bid so I stuck too it. I was just concerned about the seller getting my max bid out of me that way. Better informed is better armed as I always say. Thanks!

I can understand getting a second chance offer a few days after the auction ends but getting one only 30 seconds after it ended when the high bidder bid in the last few minutes? That smells like a fish market on a sunny summer afternoon

Did you try to research the seller's history and see if the same bidder shows up by chance as having bid on several other of the seller's items, particularly with the same last minute technique? If so, then you should turn them in for shill bidding to prevent others from being taken. Very possible they were just playing to system to get your max price out of you.

I'm with Biokemist6 on this one, that's way too soon after the end of the auction.

I agree that sellers shouldn't shill bid, and should be reported if they do. But don't confuse that being forced to pay too much for the coin. A buyer's maximum bid is their choice. You shouldn't put in a bid higher than you are comfortable paying, and you should assume that when you put that max bid in that it will be the price you pay if you win the auction. If you get it under your max bid so much the better.

The second chance was at my max bid, which is what I was willing to pay for the coin or I would have bid lower. If the the second chance email had come in a day or two later or he had said up front that he had a second coin. I think that might have been better.
The seller had a different coin that I was going to bid on also but after that experience I won't bid on it and probably won't bid on any of his other coins.

This seller has another coin that is about to end so I am watching and sure enough 1 minute before the end along comes a bidder and bids upo the coin so I check his bidding record for the last 30 days.
30-Day Summary
Total bids: 52
Items bid on: 41
Bid activity (%) with this seller: 96%
Bid retractions: 0
Bid retractions (6 months): 0
Yeah 96% with the same seller......

With the circumstances and that bid history, I'd say there is definitely shill bidding going on.

Report the seller to ebay and let them investigate further.

If it's a coin I'd really like to have I tend to log in near the bidding end and place my bids.
Lately I've found what I consider to be an increase in shill bidding.
Have had a number of second chance offers. You gotta' be careful in this big bad world.

If it's something that I really want, I will make the time (depending on my work schedule) to tune-in and make my final bid at the last couple of seconds (provided that my max bid has not been reached).
