I just landed a bag of 5000 steel cents for a reasonable cost (or so I thought). This bag contains 90% heavy rusted cents. Was 215.00 a steel (pun intended). What's a reasonable re-sell on this bag? Is there anything that can be done about this rust without de-valuing the coins? I don't ever clean my coins but man these are ugly. I mean when I open the bag a cloud of rust rolled out!

sorry... I'd say find the least rusted ones. They sound past restoration, unless you can make out an error coin or something..

I'm against cleaning coins.

HOWEVER, since these are all '43 wheat cents you can't remove much value by cleaning them properly. If it is worth your time, and the cost of some vaseline, I would practice on a few with some petroleum jelly and then do more if you like the results.
Rest in Peace

The rust damages the surface of the coin. I think cleaning them is not worth the time. This is a common problem with steel cents. When it is not stated the first question to the seller should always be "Are there any rusted cents in the lot?". I personally spend the rusted ones and when I occasionally find one roll searching I don't keep it. Is there any way to return the bag? If not then unfortunately this is a lesson learned the hard way.

Looking closer at this bag approximately 5% still have orginal luster, 20% are rust free (but milky gray), 25% have light rust and 55% have heavy rust. I also noticed that 5,000 steel cent bags tend to bring a (much) higher pirce then common wheats! So $215.00 is not looking so bad after all. I'm going to post a new question about selling "not so common Wheat cent bags" next.
