Like bobbyhelmet, I just couldn't help myself. I've broken my promise to myself and purchased three more coins. To my defense, though, all three of these coins are unique to my collection (as if they all aren't, eh?). But I wanted to show off the coins here and perhaps get a little input about the coins, especially the third coin. The first coin is an AE Fraction of Maximianus RIC VI 46b: OBV: IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right REV: CONCORDIA MILITVM, emperor standing right in military dress, short sceptre in left hand, receiving Victory on globe from Jupiter standing left, holding sceptre; Delta between, ALE in ex The second coin is an AE Centenionalis of Decentius RIC 215,G: OBV: D N DECENTIVS NOB CAES, cuirassed bust right, Gamma behind REV: VICT DD NN AVG ET CAES, two Victories standing facing each other holding shield inscribed VOT/V/MVLT/X, RS in ex And the last coin I am going to post withholding the RIC number in order to see if some of the newer collectors can attribute the coin. To help out a bit, it is called a pagan commemorative Quarter-Nummus. Although it is listed as common, this is the first of it's kind I have seen for sale. I'm looking forward to your comments. Regards to all, JW

Not as cheap as I tried to get them. Actually, by my standard, not cheap at all. The first and the last coins come from a dealer in Australia of all places (sorry SAP), and cost $30 and $37.55 respectively. The second coin, which I had to have, came from Spain and I'm almost ashamed to say I spend $43. If my wife knew how much I spend on this hobby I wouldn't be here talking to you. I'd be six feet under (and that's not down under either)! Quote:

I have it cataloged as a coin of MAXIMINUS II DAIA, but you are correct about Julianus II. Though formerly attributed to the period of Julian II, these pieces were struck c. 305-313 as part of The Great Persecution of Christians in the east by Diocletian, Galerius and Maximinus II Daia. I'm impressed! Thanks to all for the compliments.

I looked this one up and it came up on ebay so I copied and pasted it here but I so I dont know if eveything matches up. Look at what they are trying to sell this one at, looks like you got a deal. All three are very nice coins and have much detail. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pagan-Ancie...8673#vi-desc

I found some of these pagan commemorative Quarter-Nummus coins for sale on Vcoins, but the cost was at least double what I paid. The Decentius coins on Vcoins are also nearly double in the shape of the one I purchased. So that makes me feel somewhat better for breaking my budget. Personally, the portrait on the Maximianus I find to be outstanding and may be very close to the best portrait I have on a base metal coin.

I can see why you bought these coins, and I am gaining more and more respect for your sense of taste in ancients, you never cease to amaze me with your finds. The portrait on the first one is very very nice and caught my eye first thing.

The Maximianus has a really nice portrait. The Pagans are among my favorite coins and I am making some headway in completing the set by workshop numbers of the two common types. The other common one is shown about halfway down my page: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/do...th/voc5.htmlalong with an explanation of why you have trouble finding them in RIC. I won't give it away here and spoil jw's joke. A few of mine can be seen on CoinProject: http://www.coinproject.com/search_e...city=&type=3The Decentius is Rome mint and really a lot better than average for these. I'd certainly love to have any of these three.

Small wonder you broke your own promise!
I have about 20 or so late Roman bronzes, none of them as nice as these.
I would have jumped at them too!
