I bought a 1921 Liberty Walker at Brandon coin show near Tampa last Saturday. Good condition and I paid $120 for it. I just have the 1921-D left to complete the collection. I bought a 1926-S Peace dollar at the same show. I can spend $1000 in ten minutes or less at these shows. The coins I am looking for are available. The only missing item is money on my part. I notice I start to choke on the last few high price coins when trying to finish a collection. No problems getting all the cheaper fill-in-the-blank coins but I start to feel the pain when spending on relatively expensive coins. I wonder if these collections might appreciate in 10-15 years so my widow can cash them in and spend it on something usefull. I also bought a 2015 Silver Eagle for $20. I would say that is a pretty good deal since silver is about $16 on the spot market. If I could buy one St. Gauden's double eagle in uncirculated condition that would be a fine way to top it off. I don't care how common the date. I see only 533,000 1923 double eagles were made in 1923 and 8,816,000 were made in 1928 but price the same. How come? I am using Red Book as rough guide.

Yes, I do wonder how many of these old coins still exist. For instance, I want to collect the 1921-D Liberty Walker and I see about 250,000 or so were minted. Where are these coins now? I don't see many of these coins in EF, AU or uncirculated condition. Regarding the 20 Dollar Gold Pieces how do we value them considering what you said about the big meltdown done by FDR? Is there some reliable way to estimate the number of coins in existence? It is obvious that a coin with mintage of 500,000 is going to be more rare today than one with mintage of 12,000,000. Even with common silver coins you don't see them in circulation so where are they? Are all in collections of some sort or were mass amounts melted down back when we went of gold and silver standards. I notice that even gold and silver bullion coins become collectable in time. That Silver Eagle has a beautiful design as does the Gold Eagle. I bet these coins will become more and more collectible just like the gold bullion Buffalo $50 piece just because of iconic image. I guess whatever someone is willing to pay is the value of a coin, stamp, car, house etc. Nothing has intrinsic value.
