I like the price and convenience, but if anyone knows of a good competitor I'm always willing to shop around. Bought this 1928D the other day as part of a bunch I purchased at a pawn shop. Paid $135 for 42 early date (1916-1931) dimes. Was able to weed out all but a few borderline AGs. About a dozen out of the lot were VG or better. This looks to be a VF20 to me without all the gunk on it. I showed it to owner of LCS and he considered it junk silver due to gunk and bad rim damage. I'm going to try to clean with acetone at least. What do you all think, does the rim damage drop it down a few grades if the acetone cleans it up? I can post some after shots in a couple of days. Unfortunately, I think the rim damage is enough to knock its value by a few grades, even if you can clean the gunk off.

Thanks Thundercoin! That is exactly what I was hoping to better understand. So if this is maybe a VF20 (after potential gunk removal and ignoring rim damage), then maybe it becomes a decent VG10 or F12 without gunk, and with rim damage considered? I'll do my acetone experiment and re-post photos likely next week.

My life on here is "Sorry, no pics!" Anyway, I got some more album fillers for my Buffalo nickel collection- a 1917, 1936-D, and a 1937 for $5. Yikes. I also picked up a SUPER worn Barber dime, 1903 P, for $4. As you can tell, I purchased these items from a pawn shop  |
