I've had this 1876 25c in my collection for a while but never knew how to grade it. Just curious on how to grade something with such extensive damage.

I don't really see it clearly. Could you post better pics please. I do see circular indentations on the cardinal points of the coin. Unless it's some sort of weird, rare chopmark, I don't see it augmenting the grade nor the value and even reducing it. Just for guess, since I'm not really good at grading, I'll say XF-AU details.

it looks quite possibly unc to me but as 10x said, the marks on the front of it ruin the collectability

It does look like a decent grade but those circles take and draw you away from the eye appeal. Too bad.

Some kid probably was playing with his dads hammer and punch tool. I bought it when I was really young when ebay first started.

When you have damage like this on a higher grade coin do grading companies knock off a few grades due to the damage or does the slab say i.e. au 58 damaged?

If the problem is minor for the coin they might just knock off a few grades and slab it as a non problem coin. If the problem is too severe they will state an apparent grade and then state the problem. So it would be something like AU details/Damaged.
