In another posting, rachums107 presented a graded Mercury without telling us the grade and asked what we thought the grade was... I was going to bring up a question there, but I thought deserved it's own post...

Do you think NGC might be a tad, just ever-so-much the slightest bit more liberal in it's grading than PCGS?

I ask because I think, IMO, that maybe PCGS might be very slightly more conservative in handing out the higher grades, especially on Mercury Heads and Walking Liberties. What's your thoughts?

I like both and think both make mistakes. I buy the coin not the holder

Conventional wisdom says PCGS is the most strict, but I don't have personal experience with it. However, NGC has a notorious reputation for being quick to call a coin cleaned. So even if they give a higher grade, you have a higher risk of getting a "cleaned" label which would more than cancel out any increase in grade you might get.

I've always heard than, but my experience does not back it up. In fact, my recent experience with saints has been that NGC grades tougher.

Merclover, thanks for writing this topic. I have been wondering about this as well. We've never sent a coin in as of yet and are now in a position to do so.
FOR WHAT THIS IS WORTH.....
Coin dealers here (north florida), seem to like PCGS a bit more even though NGC is just down the road from here, 3 hours. The primary dealer I have dealt with has said he prefers PCGS for overall grading unless he has proofs or MS64 and above. He doesn't really elaborate on this, but obviously if you have a large # of coins to send in a point here and there can add up to a large sum.
In this area, most of what I see is NGC holders but I'm sure that's largely due to my location.
So.....what are we to do. Merclover, you and I have coins to send in. Give me your thoughts on what the others have written here. I still can't make up my mind...

NGC by far. Coin from NGC came back as AU details - Improperly Cleaned.

PCGS sent the coin back as AU-58, nothing mentioned about improperly cleaned....
